The opportunity to participate in treatment programming is available to all individuals housed at the HSO.

The mission of the Hampshire Sheriff's Office (HSO) Treatment Department is to promote public safety by providing opportunities for successful reintegration to each individual sentenced to this facility.

Through our collaborative efforts with community partners, the HSO Treatment Department focuses on:

Amherst College Inside Out Program

In 2005, the HSO established a relationship with Amherst College and began offering a four credit class in the House of Correction each semester with twelve student participants from Amherst College and twelve participants from the HJHC. This program offers a unique opportunity for offenders to engage in an educational experience that may otherwise be unavailable to them.

Monthly Re-entry Roundtable

In 2005, the HSO initiated a collaboration between local police departments, the Massachusetts State Police, the departments of parole and probation, and numerous community service providers to review transitioning offenders. This coordinated effort allows a sharing of information and resources between the many agencies involved with individuals leaving custody and returning to the community. It supports a more coordinated transition for men leaving the House of Correction and the numerous organizations they are involved with during release.

Western Massachusetts Recovery & Wellness Center

The Hampshire County House of Correction is one of five county facilities that utilize the Western Massachusetts Recovery and Wellness Center in Springfield. The center is operated by the Hampden Sheriff's Office and provides custody and treatment for offenders incarcerated for OUI and OUI related offenses. All offenders incarcerated in the Hampshire House of Correction for OUI and related offenses are screened for transfer and participation in the WMRWC program. Men in Phases I, II, and III are eligible to transfer to this facility.

Lifeskills Program

Within the secure perimeter of HSO campus, there is a dormitory-style modular unit which consists of two sixty-man housing units. One sixty-bed unit, the South Side, has become the Community Accountability Program (CAP). It serves as both pre-treatment and initial treatment, Phase I, for inmates. The other unit, the North Side, became the Lifeskills Program in October of 1999. The unit contains a sixty-bed comprehensive substance abuse treatment program for highly motivated individuals. Since 2004, the Lifeskills Program has been evolving into a Phase Program, and now functions as Phase II. Each of the two units has a common area called the day room, where most treatment groups occur. Since July of 2005, the minimum and pre-release have been included in the treatment program, and serves as both Phase III of the Lifeskills Program, and Phase IV Pre-Release/Work-Release.
